Hogg Family Artifacts
I performed a collection and preservation needs assessment on a group of Hogg family artifacts owned by the Hogg Foundation for Mental Health. The project included: a complete inventory referencing a recent appraisal; documentation of the condition of each artifact; storage recommendations that fit both best practices and were feasible for the archive; general preservation suggestions; and implementation of storage for some of the more delicate items. For the most fragile items in the collection, the textiles, I executed improved storage that will help to preserve these objects for the future.
Many of the items are in very good shape, simply needing improved storage. For this item, the main issue is copper corrosion discoloring the leather belt. I recommended placing small strips of Mylar between the belt loop on the Concha and the leather belt to prevent further discoloration and deterioration from the corrosion.
Most of the artifacts in the collection were items that would more usually be found in a museum, not at an archive for a non-profit foundation. The archivist of the Hogg Foundation is knowledgeable regarding the preservation of paper-based and digital artifacts, however the Hogg family artifacts require different storage than most paper-based archival materials.
